Reflection – Thursday 24 January 2013

bottom-up

What happened?

This morning we attended to the workshop tutorial, learned basic skills of operating machines of the workshop room and had an exercise of making a wood cube. It might be very helpful for our prototypes making in the future.

We turned back to the client presentation preparation in the afternoon. As a group, we all contributed to improve our initial slide layout we decided yesterday to make it express clearer message to the client and also fit more to the brand identity of WithScotland. In the same time, the script for slides had been written and improved times until we got the satisfied structure and we adjusted the slides to fit the script more. Then the voiceover was added into the slides. Also the content of group blog we will show to our client was discussed and the initial campaign concepts and user journey maps were uploaded on the blog.

So what?

Today we almost finished the preparation for Friday’s presentation. The amount of work is huge but it’s happy to complete it with all group members working together. Today’s work gives us a deeper impression of how important it is to prepare well with all the details before reporting to the clients. The approach and content of presentation for client is considered carefully. And with the development of our group work, more skills of research and communication and technologies of various medias are gained.

What’s next?

We need to organize everything includes slides with voiceover, posts in the group blog and navigation links of the blog with more consideration. More work on video upload and blog establishment will be done in the next morning. Tomorrow we will present all the materials for the client with our academic support firstly and maybe fix them a bit till we present to the real client. After we get the feedback from WithScotland we will start further research with a new detailed plan.

G5 – Visualising the Voice of WithScotland – Initial Concepts

Hello Beth,

We would like to thank you once more for the opportunity you gave us to work with you.

Since our last meeting, our group worked on what has been said last Friday and established an in-depth investigation, which lead us into having a few suggestions on how to move forward.

Enjoy our video and we will be looking forward for your response.

Regards,

GROUP 5.

Ding, Skyler, Zoe, Selina, Alex

Here are some initial campaign concepts for WithScotland, please click on them to see the original size.

concept1We will promote awareness through a  print and online advertising campaign that speaks to your core users, one that can be interchangeable by profession and quickly recognizable with your brand image and use of hands.

A child’s hand reaching to a teacher, a child protection officer’s hand reaching from above, and WithScotland connecting them all.

concept2

This is a video showing children holding a torn piece of cardboard box, with a written message to the audience.

concept3

This idea is one video which stresses on the comparison of kid’s life in school and back home. It attempts to awake teachers’ emotional need (not just responsibility) to protect kids and explains that with the support from WithScotland teachers could do better to notice child abuse situations and deal with child protection issues.

concept4

This concept contains three topics of combination of one blur photo as background plus statistics in the front and one video to explain teachers’ problem to deal with child protection issues, teachers getting help from WithScotland and final outcomes of supported by WithScotland.

concept5

A video for teachers that will share their personal story, what they love about their job and an experience of saving a child, linking to WithScotland.

SWOT analysis

swot_img2

STRENGTHS

  • one-stop shop
  • well networked organisation (mostly around Scotland)
  • Unique Selling Point: “connecting – exchanging – protecting”
  • an organisation that has recently start performing after the separation of a larger agency that used to belong to -> might harm the reputation of it.
  • not very aware to the public – current contact only through the website.

OPPORTUNITIES

  • Make WithScotland a well-known organisation first across the country and the target an international or global awareness.
  • to create a larger network of agencies, create contacts with other countries.
  •  expand their ways of communication (not only using the website and postcards as promoting themselves).

THREATS

  • “another charity” <- need to avoid people creating this perception.
  • “what different can they do” Need to emphasise on the individuality of the organisation.

Networking strategy of WithScotland

Who-You-Know_F5  A well know quote for explaining networking is “its not what you know, is who you know”! in this case we are interested to know who knows our client.

With Scotland is a well networked organisation. They provide links for every agency that deals with their area of expertise, mainly in Scotland but with few links of agencies in the UK.

Some well-known contacts of With Scotland are all the city councils in Scotland (links that direct you to the city council’s website for abuse), Police, NHS, YoungScot, BBC and many more.

From a business point of view, our client using a ‘snowball sample’ strategy. That means that they approach a certain part of the audience (in that case the agencies that they work with), in order to attract a much wider audience.

Looking at those information from a user point of view, the links to those websites are packed in a way that make it complex for navigating to the appropriate service (or there are to many to find exactly what you are looking for). Is the use of all these intermediaries that doesn’t make our client message clear?

What happened? :

in the morning the group had the opportunity to review their findings and extend their research, from the day before.

Following with an update meeting with Hazel that was discussing the videos created by the students and discuss on the way of leaving a meaningful feedback and being able to accept the criticism of others.  Another topic discussed, was considering the communication with our client, in order to show our progress and ask any further questions that we might have.

The team has met afterwards, discussing their findings, changes that need to be made regarding the looks of the blog and how we can work in the project from now on.

So what?  :

Approaching our reasearch from different areas, according to the strengths of each group member, we have accomplished to clarify the problem and what we are dealing with, so we can schedule our next move.

Working on the appearance of the blog also makes it more personal and shows the teams creative character.

Regarding the feedback of the videos, would aim in improving what was made on the day but also provide us with the ability of leaving critical comments to others.

What’s next?  :

Each member has to consider which audience we want to target and relevant information to support that opinion.

Also, based on the videos found so far, each should develop an idea of how we can promote our project and how we can send the message of WithScotland.

Finally, we need to decide a format of presenting to our client our progress so far.

Good video examples pick from the Pinterest board

This comes from a charity of water and tries to challenge the audience to imagine themselves in someone else’s shoes:

This video is about poverty problem and mainly uses texts change:

This video is called “Back to the Start”, very good application of real models and I think it may be a stop-motion animation.

RSA Animate – The Empathic Civilisation, uses live sketch to tell the story.

Celebrate Generosity Day: tells the story with a cartoon style

End Mandatory Immigration Detention: an example of combing people’s voice and locations on the map to show the national impact, may be applied for us to show how professional people combine to each other.

Let’s Start a Learning Revolution: great uses of infodesign and also relates to education promotion.

A human rights revolution: applies infodesign into the video with another style:

It’s in Your Hands : Simple idea and very creative way of storytelling, send a strong message. Asks a question at the beginning that keeps you watching.

Changing your perspective

postcard reflection week 2 day1

During a previous module our Design for Services class was introduced to the idea of producing reflective postcards. The thinking behind this idea is to be self reflective in a visual and concise way. It aims to cover what has happened, what that means and to also encourage reflections on the next steps. Over the next week each group member will be taking this approach in a way to map our research journey.

The key learning for today was seeing.

What happened?

Our day began with a mind mapping activity to record the areas that need further research and investigation. The group immediately set about completing individual tasks and later reported their findings.

The afternoon session was about developing our skills in video editing and production, finding our own story and telling it appropriately.

So what?

These activities were a successful way to start the week. Allowing each group member to focus on a task best utilised the skills of the group and ensured that research is progressing according to plan.

Producing videos provided the opportunity to develop as visual storytellers and improve technical abilities. Working in pairs ensured that everyone had an active role, encouraging positive teamwork to support technical developments.

What’s next?

Completing tasks individually and feeding back to the group ensures that many jobs are being covered and all areas are moving forward. This is something we will continue as the research progresses.

The idea of working to your strengths whilst at the same time being prepared to learn, explore and try new things is an exciting place to be and something that we will continue to pursue. ‘Seeing’  an individual’s potential rather than merely their deficiencies ensures team success and personal development.
